Chocolate covered oreos. I've been seeing them all over Instagram for some time - mostly American or Canadian bakeries, but they're a trend that appeals to me. I mean chocolate + oreos = how can you go wrong? Mostly, the chocolate covered oreos across the internet are pretty and delicate, but mine are more for fun. I knew they were a success when my eldest son pottered over to me in the kitchen, asked me what I was making and then looked me in the eye saying, "Mummy, remember that I am your official taste tester forever. I'd like that one there with the sprinkles."
These are simple and super fun to make. My celebration cakes have been taking over my weeks lately and so I really wanted something instantly (well, almost) gratifying. If you fancy having a go at them, it's time to get creative. I only made 6 and settled for sprinkles, chocolate covered popping candy and a little silver leaf. You will need 6 oreo cookies and some of your favourite chocolate. These are also popular using golden oreos or milk | dark chocolate - really, whatever appeals to you. They take around 40 mins to make, mostly setting in the freezer. It's important that you let the layers set fully and I've kept mine in the freezer as the chocolate tends to get sticky quite quickly. I'm not sure how bakeries in the summer manage them, but I'm contemplating a trip to the States just to check it out :)
These are fun to make for kids or with them - and with the long summer hols fast approaching, keep these in your back pocket for a rainy day!
White Chocolate Oreos Makes 6
Ingredients
- 6 OREO COOKIES
- TOPPINGS OF YOUR CHOICE (mine were sprinkles, chocolate covered popping candy and silver leaf)
- 200G WHITE CHOCOLATE (or whichever chocolate you prefer)
Method
- Using a cupcake tin, cover the bottom of the cupcake cavities with your topping of choice - you only need a thin layer but cover the whole base evenly
- Melt around 50g white chocolate and pour a thin layer of chocolate across the sprinkles until they're all covered
- Put the tin in the freezer to set the chocolate for 10 mins
- Remove the tin from the freezer and make sure that the chocolate is set - then place an oreo cookie in the middle on top of the chocolate
- Melt the remaining chocolate and then fill the cavity around the edge of the cookie first then a layer over the top of the cookie
- Tap the cupcake tray on the table to even out the chocolate
- Add more chocolate if neccessary to ensure that the whole oreo cookie is covered
- Pop back in the freezer for 20 mins until fully set
- Remove the fridge and pop out of their tins
- Keep in the freezer until ready to eat - in a warm kitchen the chocolate gets sticky but that's just part of the fun :)
